Context Matters

STUDENT-DRIVEN LEARNING

  • The definition of success in education or "who has won the race" has been defined by standardized outcomes established over 100 years ago and the definition is simply wrong. As educators we recognize that not all students can or should go to university and yet university acceptances are celebrated visibly on the walls and websites of schools throughout the world. Allowing students and their families to choose the horizon and supporting, even honoring those choices is an essential component of student driven learning.

  • Have you ever faced that divide between what you "know" is in the student's best interest and the choices they or their family make? What was your response? How might you respond differently today?

To what extent does your school celebrate alternative paths forward beyond college acceptances (e.g., enlisting in the military, community service, a job or apprenticeship, a Gap year)?

Does your school promote a full range of careers?
