Eye on Student Protagonism: The Chainsaw Tree: A Student-Centered Approach to Global Reforestation Awareness

The Eye on Student Protagonism virtual events are dynamic professional learning experiences where students take center stage, sharing their projects, research, and initiatives. Each one-hour session features student-led presentations, interactive discussions, and opportunities for attendees to ask questions and provide feedback. These events foster connections among educators, students, and community members passionate about transformative education. Participants leave inspired by innovative student-driven ideas and teaching methods that can be applied in their own educational contexts.

Liger Academy's students will share their chainsaw tree project which has spanned nearly eight years and involved 50+ students. The treasure trove of outcomes and products includes, but is not limited to: a 5m tall chainsaw tree constructed on Liger's campus from confiscated chainsaws donated by the government; a 10m tall chainsaw tree constructed in a forest preservation and tourism site in northern Cambodia; an original science-fiction novel written, illustrated and desktop published by students, aimed at Cambodian teenagers, telling the dystopian tale of the chainsaw tree; an English version of the book, just recently set to publish on Amazon; global performance, poetry, and photography competitions as part of a reforestation awareness campaign; a working draft of a pitch to turn the chainsaw tree original story into an animated movie.

Guest Bio

Dom Sharpe held the position of Country Director at Liger for 12 years; this year he has transitioned into the role of Executive Advisor and Strategist. Over a decade ago, Dom accidentally stumbled upon the "graveyard" of hundreds of confiscated chainsaws, had the inspired idea for the chainsaw tree, and has played an instrumental advisory role in all chainsaw tree-related products and resulting impacts since.
