Big Think: Teachers Across Borders South Africa (TABSA)

Join us for a compelling conversation with Yunus Peer, founder of Teachers Across Borders South Africa (TABSA), and Brad Uy, longtime TABSA volunteer. TABSA addresses the educational disparities left by apartheid, providing rural educators with STEM training and professional development. Their grassroots efforts have empowered over 7,500 teachers, impacting millions of students in Southern Africa.

Yunus Peer, originally from Port Shepstone, South Africa, has spent over 26 years teaching History and World Civilizations at Punahou School in Hawai‘i. In addition to his work in the classroom, Yunus is the driving force behind Teachers Across Borders South Africa (TABSA), an organization he co-founded to address the educational disparities in post-apartheid South Africa. Since 2001, he has led workshops that provide essential STEM training for rural educators, reaching thousands of teachers and impacting millions of students.

Brad Uy hails from the beautiful islands of Hawai`i and is a creative and light-hearted educator. He has taught math and English for 15 years and has volunteered on eight trips with Teachers Across Borders - Southern Africa. He currently teaches 8th grade mathematics at Kamehameha Schools, Hawai`i, an educational institution dedicated to serving native Hawaiian children. For recreation, Brad enjoys reading, tennis, and cooking; he also casually dabbles in photography.
