A Note from Kapono: Unleashing Our Potential, Together

To educate is an act of social justice. It is also an act of civic engagement, caretaking, and safeguarding. In this era of COVID lockdowns, increasing societal unrest, widespread misinformation, and distrust, these tenets are more important than ever. It is with a passion for these tenets and what education could be that I join the What School Could Be community as its Executive Director.

The challenges posed by the COVID pandemic don’t define this era of educational change. However, they do shine a light on where we can do better. Our students, their families, as well as teachers and leaders, need the support to make it through this epidemic safely and not to go back to a normal that was clearly not working, but instead to emerge into a bold new vision of school. Similarly, schools not only could be but should be safe places where all students and educators can address issues of equity and justice. These are just some of the problems that weigh heavy on the hearts of educators worldwide and are just some of the issues that the What School Could Be community endeavors to transform.

What School Could Be (WSCB) is a community, which means that you, its community members, are its most important asset. Our goal is that through producing world-class content and partnering with global experts, we can nurture a collaborative community that allows us to unleash our potential, together. The ideas and solutions are already with us - with you, the members of the community. By sharing small steps to big change, the WSCB community is already transforming our schools for students and educators everywhere. I’m glad you have decided to join us on this journey. We are listening, and the community is yours to shape!

It’s an honor to be a part of the What School Could Be community. Thank you for the warm welcome, and I look forward to working with you all to unleash our potential, together.

Sincerely,

Kapono Ciotti, PhD
Executive Director, What School Could Be
