Looking Ahead at WSCB in 2023

Dear members of The What School Could Be community,

Welcome to the start of an exciting 2023! If you start reading this, please read to the end. Spoiler alert: There’s a plot twist.

As we embark on the journey of a new calendar year together, I want to remind you of the incredible potential we have to positively impact our students’ lives. What School Could Be is a community of educators, leaders, and innovators who are dedicated to creating a future in which all students thrive.

As we, the educators of WSCB, prepare our students for 2050, it is vital that we focus on two core values: taking small yet powerful steps to make significant change and embracing innovation in the process of that change.

First, taking small steps to make big change: At What School Could Be, we understand that the future is uncertain and that change can be overwhelming. However, we also know that small actions can have a big impact. By taking small steps each day, we can create a more equitable and inclusive school community. This means being proactive in addressing issues of bias and actively creating opportunities for everyone to be heard and valued. It also means being intentional in creating a positive and supportive school culture and creating opportunities for students to develop the skills they need to be successful in the future.

Innovation is the second core value that helps us transform learning for all students. The world of 2050 will be vastly different from today, and we must ensure that our students are prepared to navigate this rapidly changing landscape. This means providing them with the skills, knowledge, and experiences they need to be successful in a variety of fields, from science and technology to art and design. It also means encouraging them to think creatively and take risks and providing opportunities for them to explore their passions and interests.

To accomplish these goals, we must work together as a community. We must be willing to take risks and try new things, even if they may not always work out as planned. We must also be open to feedback and ready to make adjustments as we learn and grow.

One adjustment we will discuss in 2023 is the disruption of AI in education. For example, ChatGPT wrote the entire welcome message above when I gave it the prompt “Write a 500-word welcome letter to the membership of the What School Could Be community, inspiring them to embrace the ideas of “small steps to big change” and innovation as they prepare students for 2050.”

In my own words now, I want to thank you for being part of WSCB and invite you to take advantage of a fantastic Spring season we have planned for you. We have inspiring guests, compelling workshops, and transformative experiences designed to support educators-inspiring-educators. So join us as we unleash potential, together
